Why the Social Media algorithms are not the most important algorithms in your life

Why the social media algorithms are not the most important algorithm running in your life.

Hi, and welcome to Philosopher Insights. My name is Herb Lamba. Today I wanted to share an insight inspired by 'Homo Deus' by Yuval Noah Harari. He's talking about why algorithms are the number one skill we need to learn in the 21st century. What he's not talking about is what most people are focused on today. They're focused on how to boost the social media algorithms because they figured out if you spend some time liking other people's posts, whether you really liked them or not, you'll get more people seeing your posts and you'll get more, likes, more comments.

Some people are completely addicted to this behavior. It's an addiction. Facebook created a great tool - all the social media platforms to get us addicted. We're trying to feed that algorithm, boost that algorithm to hopefully get more results. All we're really doing is we're feeding our Ego.

Let's talk about a far more important alg...

Hi, and welcome to Philosopher Insights. My name is Herb Lamba.  Today I wanted to share an insight from, 'With Winning in Mind,' by Lanny Bassham. Laterville or Winnerville - Where do you live?

Where do you live?

This insight is from a great book 'Surrounded by Setbacks' by Thomas Erikson.

Enjoy!

______________________________________________________________________________________

Hi and welcome to Philosopher Insights. My name is Herb Lamba.   Today. I wanted to share an insight from 'Surrounded by Setbacks' by Thomas Erikson - and it's the difference between Laterville , living in Laterville, and living in Winnerville.

Let's talk about the people living in Laterville, which is the majority of people.  If you're the person that has an idea or a project or a goal, but you're always waiting until later because you can't get yourself to believe that this is the right time.  It's not the right time because the wrong government may be in office.   It's not the right time because it's winter, I'd rather start this in the summer - as an example when you talk about an exercise program.

It's a project, but I need a new computer, so I'll start that later when I get the new co...

Have you taken your TRIP TO HELL yet?

Life’s Biggest Regrets...A Trip to Hell

I am sharing this in hopes of encouraging others to reflect on their own lives.   If COVID has taught the entire world one lesson, I believe it was that life is short and should never be taken for granted.  Nobody is promised a tomorrow.

In 2019, I was asked to try a reflective exercise called ‘A TRIP TO HELL’. This seemingly insignificant exercise changed my entire perspective about life.  I chose to share today because my hope is it may have the same impact on others.

Sit in a quiet place and simply fast-forward your life to your very last day on earth.  You are lying on your deathbed and there is nothing more that can be done for you.  You are surrounded by family, and at the entrance to the hospital room, you notice a radiant person who is well-dressed, smiling, and from all outward appearances enjoying life.  However, you cannot make out who that is from a distance,  but you are certain they are not part of your family.

As they approac...

Key Stone Habits - The One Habit That Lays the Foundation for All Other Habits

Uncategorized Nov 30, 2021

Have you discovered your Keystone Habit?

You should consider identifying that something that will have a significant positive impact on your life. Researchers refer to this as a "keystone habit." Our keystone habits keep us super strong, and their benefits cascade into the rest of our lives, just as a keystone secures an arch and ensures its strength and integrity.

For me, it was waking up at 5 AM - that simple decision has allowed me to incorporate so many other important activities into my life.

Remember:  Keep it simple - don't overwhelm yourself with a habit that is nearly impossible to stick to - like running on the treadmill for 60 minutes when you haven't run around the block in years.

Enjoy!

GRIT_Why Effort Counts Twice?

Uncategorized Nov 17, 2021

In today's quick video blog, I share some valuable insights from 'GRIT' by Angela Duckworth.

If you believe you cannot get started on your dream or achieve something difficult in your life, then her research should encourage you.

Angela Duckworth is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Founder and Scientific Director of the Character Lab, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development. In 2013, Angela was named a MacArthur Fellow in recognition of her research on grit, self-control, and other non-IQ competencies that predict success in life.

“Without effort, your talent is nothing more than your unmet potential. Without effort, your skill is nothing more than what you could have done but didn’t. With effort, talent becomes skill and, at the very same time, effort makes skill productive.”  - Angela Duckworth.

Find out why EFFORT counts twice and why it trumps talent and IQ as the factor most likely to pred...

The 'New' Breakfast of Champions

Uncategorized Nov 10, 2021

In today's blog, I share with you a new way of looking at the Breakfast Of Champions.  It used to be Wheaties, the cereal, but now it's been upgraded to a special type of breakfast sandwich.

I promise you make this sandwich a part of your diet and you are on your way to great things.

The obstacles you face in your life do make you stronger, so let's start eating them for breakfast.

Enjoy!

Hi and welcome to Philosopher Insights. My name is Herb Lamba.

Today, I wanted to talk about the Breakfast of Champions, but we're going to create a different type of breakfast sandwich.  You all know about the breakfast of champions, the cereal from 1980's I think, or even before that... They used to have pictures of Muhammad Ali and Jesse Owens on it. We want to create a different type of 'Breakfast of Champions.'

We're going to create a breakfast sandwich with some different ingredients, ingredients that are going to help you optimize and improve your life. So let's start wit...

Once again, Mel delivers a book that is quick and easy to read that shares a very simple strategy to help transform our lives.  Yep - when I say simple, I mean super simple.  She shares with you the power of high-fiving ourselves, a shift from what the majority of us do in our lives  - we are busy high-fiving others, but Mel shares compelling research to prove that celebrating YOU using a High Five can be life-transforming.

I hope you enjoy the insights, and I would highly recommend you purchase the book for yourself.  It really is that good.

Thanks

When You Put the Man Together, The World Comes Together - It Starts with YOU!

Uncategorized Oct 26, 2021

In today's blog, I share a great analogy based on a story that is shared in one of my favorite books of all time  - 'The One Thing'  by Gary Keller.

The story is of a little boy who innocently just wants to play with his Dad - but his Dad is so busy that he makes him a deal to play with him the next morning.

It's an amazing analogy that shows you how important it is to put yourself together first  - learn to lead you before you start figuring out how to put everything else together.

WOOP_Wish, Outcomes, Obstacles, Plan

Uncategorized Oct 21, 2021

In this video, I share a brilliant strategy from Gabriele Oettingen  - WOOP  -  WISH, OUTCOME, OBSTACLE, PLAN.  It's simple and very effective and 100% backed by science.

"WOOP is a science-based mental strategy that people can use to find and fulfill their wishes, set preferences, and change their habits."

WOOP is a strategy developed by Gabriele Oettingen in her great book 'Rethinking Positive Thinking'

In her book Rethinking Positive Thinking, she claims that imagining our ideal life vision-board style is insufficient. While it's critical to begin with a picture of our ideal lives, we must then "rub it up against reality."

She invented a system called "WOOP" to assist us in manifesting our dreams. Here's a basic rundown:

The letter W stands for Wish.
The letter O stands for Outcome (or Benefits—sort of like the "why").
Obstacles are represented by the letter O.
The letter P stands for Plan.

You can create WOOP's for major goals or day-to-day priorities.  It's a very powerful tool...
