Philosopher Insights: Process Over Outcomes

Uncategorized Nov 29, 2020

Hi, my name is Herb Lamba, and welcome to Philosopher Insights.

Let me ask you a question. Where do you place your focus while you're pursuing your life's biggest goals and dreams? Are you constantly focused on the outcomes and burdened by the thoughts of why you haven't achieved them?

Or - do you put your head down every single day and focus on the process? What I have discovered in recent months is that if you want to drive up your productivity and joy plus reduce negative self-talk and complaining, then you have to change your focus from outcomes to process.

You need to make the shift from 'what I want' to. 'what do I need to get done right now? '

I remember setting a daunting goal of reading 52 books in 2020.  I remember vividly writing down that goal, and at the very same moment my negative mind started to trigger - "Are you nuts? You'll never achieve that goal!"

"Be more realistic! You're a slow reader!" - and all kinds of other thoughts that weren't helping me move toward my goal. These thoughts crept up so many times this year, - but now I've learned to remind myself of what I want and then quickly switch gears and do what needs to get done!

I need to read, and I need to forget the rest. I'm so proud to say I'm still on pace to finish 52 books this year, but I focus less now on the outcome, and I focus all my efforts on the process of getting there.

So today's insight - make a conscious effort to take your focus off the outcome and place all your focus on 'what do I need to get done right now.!'

You've been listening to Philosopher Insights. My name is Herb Lamba and we'll talk to you soon.

Take care.
